  3. Abandoned Places

This was impressive! An old windmill, similar to what is famous in The Netherlands. Built at the beginning of the 1900’s it was abandoned at some point and now is standing there rotting. Its very interesting to see from an architectural point of view as you can see all the different boards that were used to build this monster. Stand there and marvel at the sheer size of some the main support log and the axle that would of spun as the blades of the mill turned in the wind.

WIND MILL KAMENCKOE

Looking for a interesting place near Kyiv to go for an hour and explore then dont miss this! This used to be an old space camp for children. Now it is abandoned and left to nature. You can still get in and walk around to check things out. The main hall still has beds in it like children will be arriving any minute to live out their dream of being and astronaut.

ABANDONED SPACE CAMP

This is as close as you can get to the Chernobyl reactor, legally, unless you get on a tour. The road to get here is surprisingly in good shape! While there isnt much to see unless you want to pay the hefty fee for a tour this will suffice for most people.

CHERNOBYL ENTRANCE

A surprise find for us and rather interesting to!Built in 1825 by Polish and German Experts for a Polish owner. During the Soviet Union it belonged to a cooperative farm. It is now in owned privatly and the owner has taken the time to restore it. You can now take a tour through time and see how this mill worked!Nearby there is a small island with a beautiful church!

KORZHOVA MILL AND ISLAND

We have no idea what this is other than at one time it appears to have been a church. We were just passing by and Natasha screamed STOP! We spent 20 minutes exploring the area looking for some sign or person to help us with what it was but we came up empty handed. If you like old abandoned places then check it out!

OLD CHURCH IN TOPORY

This was an incredibly impressive building! We only wish we could of went inside. It has a large fence around it with signs that say to stay out because its dangerous and they are doing a restoration. We couldn’t find much info on it other than it was a flour mill built in 1905.

FLOUR MILL 1905

We were looking for the ruins of the old Admirals house but never found them. In the same village though we found this very interesting House of Culture building. From the outside it looks to be falling apart yet inside it still looks to be set up for the local commissar to come in and give you a speech about the benefits of Socialism.  The House of Culture building was interesting but just a warning we are not sure what it was but the whole village smelled like a human sewage plant. I mean it was horrible the smell was just enough to make you want to vomit. We are not sure how anyone lives there. When asked about the smell nobody would answer….

MANOR OF REAR ADMIRAL ABAZA

Here is the remains of the small hydroelectric plant that was built to provide electric for te Naryshkin Palace. The road to get here is not so great so it might be better to walk the last kilometer or so. You will find the remains of the building and also a small concrete basin that was used to catch fish. A large pipe entering the basin and small pipes exiting so the fish become trapped.

NARYSHKIN PALACE HYDROELECTRIC PLANT

We were just passing through the village of Berezovka when we saw the ruins of their Palace of Culture. We stopped to check it out and were impressed by the shape of things! The theater floor was now covered in grass but you could look towards the stage and see the faces of Stalin and Lenin staring back at you from their original spots on the wall. Inside one of the rooms we found a giant stone bust of someone, we aren’t sure who, that we think used to sit in front of the building. All and all if your even in the area its worth stopping by to check out.

PALACE OF CULTURE IN BEREZOVKA

A beautiful location for a burial. Created by Friedrich Eduardovich Faltz-Fein who also founded the Askania Nova Nature Reserve. Friedrich built this place when his wife died at a very young age. It was intended to be the burial place of him and his family as they died. Unfortunatly for them the Soviet Union came to power and in 1919 the Askania Nova Park was confiscated from the family and they were forced to flee. All of them fled except for Friedrichs mother who refused and she went to the crypt, before it could be opened by the army, she took the bones of Friedrich’s wife and secretly buried them. Since them the crypt has been empty and slowly deteriorating.

FALZ FEIN CRYPT

We weren’t able to find to much info on this church. It was just a small church on the side of the road. One of the village elders told us it was built by the Polish and with the rise of Communism it was turned into a building to store grain. Inside you can still see the shelves built for grain storage. In general the building is falling down but it is a little interesting if your in the area and like abandoned places.

ABANDONED CHURCH ZALISSIA

Set down in an old valley the Danydivka mill was really interesting, at least for Monty.  The old 100+ year old mill was still there. The building is a shell at the moment with the interior falling apart. But outside of the building they had pieces of the original mill set up to show you what it looked like. Interestingly enough they have now set up a small hydro electric plant in the river where the old mill got its power from. It appears they are working on turning the mill into a museum to show you the advancements of harnessing water to power things.

DAVYDIVKA FLOUR MILL

In 1672 Turkish troops occupied Kaminets Podilsk. During their time there they decided to make the area stronger. They created earthen ramparts and build new gates. This is one of the gates. Located exactly beside the road you can still drive through this gate if you wish. Supposedly you can still see the earthen ramparts that were located on either side and in front of the gate but for us they were not so visible. An interesting and lesser known place between Kaminets and Khotyn Castle

LVIV GATES TO KAMINETS

A very interesting abandoned Flour Mill. Build at the turn of the 20th century it was 3 levels to produce flour using the stream nearby for power. Now it is completely abandoned and anything of value was removed from the building. If you want a nice quiet place to camp and swim this is it. Not far from the main road you can easily reach this place for a relaxing evening. The last 200 meters of road is dirt and rather steep but any car can get there.

OLD FLOUR MILL (LUPOLOVO)

We arrived here to find 4 bears caged on the side of the road. There is a huge resort here also. We were unable to get into the presidents vacation home as you have to call in advance and schedule it. We were told we needed to call at least 2 days in advance and have the info on our passports ready to give them. 0342 55-81-32 or 0342 55-81-36 were the numbers listed to call to arrange a tour. Ukrainian or Russian will be needed to make the arrangements.
