An awesome bunker that is still intact! The last 4 kilometers is on a sand road with the last 500 meters being especially bad.  In general we saw many normal cars there but it is a beautiful walk through the forest also! This is a bunker that was used in WW2. Originally made by the Soviets in the 1930's as part of the Stalin Line of Defense. Originally it would have been outfitted with 76 mm guns. It is pretty clean but might be difficult to get to by car.

BUNKER DOT 554

If you are a military enthusiast then this is a must see place! Monty loved it not so much for the memorial that is there now but for the shear history that happened in during WW2.An attempted crossing of the Dnepr in October 1943. Its still unknown exactly how many Soviet Soldiers were killed but the number varies from 50,000 to 500,000 and more. The Soldiers were herded across the water into known German positions. Many soldiers were not given weapons just told to pick up the weapons of the fallen men.Now there is a huge statue to the attempted crossing. Built on top of a hill on the ruins of the Chuchin Fortress, from 1100.

BUKRIN BRIDGEHEAD

Super cool museum right on the side of the road! Worth checking out if you are in Kaniv for sure! This is an open air, free, museum with example of heavy equipment from the military. There is an armored train, tanks, rocket launchers and even some machines from the war in Eastern Ukraine.
...

MILITARY EQUIPMENT MUSEUM KANIV

In September and October of 1943 a bridgehead was forced across the Dnepr at the village of Aula. During the fighting thousands of Soviet and german soldiers died. During this operation a total of 29 Hero of the Soviet Unions awards were issued. Now there stand a very nice memorial to those who fought and died at this bridgehead.
...

AULA BRIDGEHEAD

For a small town this monument is HUGE! A mass grave from WWII dedicated to the soldiers who died trying to secure a bridge head across the Dnepr. There are over 600 soldiers buried here. This grave site was made from relocating the remains from 3 separate mass graves to one site. It is not know exactly how many people are here or who their exact identity.
...

WW2 SOVIET GRAVE

A really cool diorama for any military enthusiasts out there to check out!A very nice small museum with a diorama depicting the crossing of the Dnepr just north of Kyiv. Outside the Museum there is a very nice statue dedicated to the men who crossed the river here along with a nice example of how the trench system would of looked during the battle.
...

BATTLE FOR KIEV DIORAMA

Not to far from Kyiv and worth visiting. Roads are good to get there and the sight is well taken care of.This sight was begun in 1996. It has been used to relocate all the German dead from WWII in Central Ukraine to one location. There will be over 40,000 soldiers here once it is completed. Constantly bodies are being relocated to this cemetery as they are found and other smaller burial sights are closed.

GERMAN WAR CEMETERY KYIV

An extensive bunker just off the main Highway from Kyiv to Odessa. The bunker is buried under a mound on dirt. On top of the mound you can still see the outlines of the trenches from the war. If you walk around enough you can find multiple entrances to the bunker and can explore a little!
...

BUNKER 211

This is a very interesting bunker. It looks complete and intact from the outside but inside it is completely blown apart. It was built in the 30's as part of the Stalin Line more exactly part of the Korosten Defensive perimeter. The road to get here is great and it is less than 3 meters off M7.
...

BUNKER ON ROAD M-7

This is a bunker that would have been built in the 30's as part of the Stalin Line of Defense. It was part of the section that was the defense of Korosten. It was partially destroyed yet still intact enough to visualize what it would have looked like in action. You can also see part of the originally trench that would of lead to the entrance of the bunker
...

BUNKER HALF DESTROYED

This is a typical bunker that is mostly intact. The best part about it is that it is now on the edge of a small lake. The lake is only about 1 meter deep to the bunker but the easiest way to get to the bunker is through a private beach. So you must pay to have access to the beach to then go to the bunker.
...

BUNKER/DOT 127 ON WATER

Another spectacular defensive bunker that was part of the Stalin Line! Built in the 1930’s this unique 3 level bunker is a must see for any military enthusiast! The first floor would of been where the fighting took place. Second floor was more for storage and then there is a third floor which compromises over 100 meters of tunnels that connect this dot with other points of strategic importance!

BUNKER/DOT 401

A memorial to the Paratroopers who took part in the disastrous Buky Bridgehead in 1943. Virtually all of the 4575 Paratroopers who jumped were killed either by the Germans or by landing in the Dnepr and drowning.

An amazing statue especially considering it is in such a small town. If your in the area it is worth visiting and the roads to get here are not to bad!

WW2 MEMORIAL IN SUSHKIVA

For a smaller town Gaisen has an astounding monument to the people who were killed in the area during the war. Over 800 civilians in the area were killed. For anyone who is a military enthusiast it is a very moving and picturesque monument they have here

GAISEN WW2 MONUMENT

We were super impressed with this place! We had read online that it was a disappointment because it was almost entirely destroyed as the Germans retreated. While this is true you can now walk around the remnants and there are very informative signs through out the park that are in Ukrainian and English with very rare pictures on them. There is also a museum telling about some of the things that happened in Vinnytsia Oblast during the war. We would recommend spending the time to walk around this place!

HITLER BUNKER

This place was rather boring. Honestly there is nothing there now except a few small hills and a small quarry. If you are near Dnipro and need a camping spot or a place to have a picnic it is worth your time. Built in 1635 by the Polish but after it was built a surprise attack by Cossacks resulted in them capturing and destroying the fortress. The Poles didn’t give up. This time hiring a German Architect to design and build a fortress that was 3 times larger. Again it was captured by the Cossacks and any survivors or defectors were killed by the Polish for giving up the fortress. The site is only a few ruins now because the Soviets started a quarry on the site to destroy it further to erase all history of Polish influence on Ukraine.

KODAK FORTRESS

This was one of the many locations the Soviets used as a springboard to get across the Dnepr during WW2. Countless amounts of men and material were used to get a beachhead on the west side of the Dnepr to continue pushing the Nazis back into Germany and ultimate victory.
...

PLASTDARM BEACH HEAD

This is perhaps best described as Mecca for Ukrainians. The island that this fortress sits on is called Hortisa. The crown jewel of the island is the Sich Fortress. There has been a fortress on this island since ancient Cossack times the earliest known was from the middle 1500’s. Now the fortress is more of a representation of Cossack life. You can walk from building to building exploring what life was like in Cossack times. From the kitchen to the weapons they used it is all here. Monty did not really understand this museum. Firstly there is no English so you are left to use your imagination as to what everything is. For Monty the best part of the museum was the amazing view you have of the huge damn on the Dnepr river. A must see for Ukrainians but for foreigners its not the best museum.

SICH FORTRESS ON HORTISYA

This one left us pretty disappointed. We found the fortress, or what we think was the fortress. But honestly it didn’t look very old. It appears that at some time in the last 100 years it was rebuilt into stables and storage for farms. Then that was abandoned and left to rot. Now there are some walls still standing in a field that overlook a small river but its nothing spectacular.
...

FORTRESS ZAKHARIEVSKAYA

This is another site we found by accident as we were looking for the local auto market to by some spare parts. There is no mention of this site anywhere that we can find and the writing on the plaque at the cemetery just indicated that these were German POW’s that died and were buried here mostly between 18 and 20 years old when they died. Their exact story we are unsure of….
...

GERMAN POW GRAVES IN ZAPOROZHIA

Built during the Crimean Wars to protect Mykoliav this would have been a huge earthen fortress essentially. It was made and inside out of lived over 15,000 soldiers and all their weapons of war along with all provisions they would need to live. Now it looks like little more than huge mounds of earth but to consider all of this earth was moved by hand it is impressive. On top of one of the earthen mounds is a memorial to all those who fought in the Crimean Wars.

ST GEORGE REDOUBT

A very impressive statue dedicated to the Soviet Soldiers of WWII. It is located on top of a huge hill and looks out over the city. The size of the statue it impressive for a town setting.

WW2 STATUE

One of the largest Bunkers in Ukraine! It was originally built by Hungary, when this part of the country was part of Hungary. It is now privately owned and the customer service here is very good. The inside of the bunker is well maintained and clean. We went on a tour of the bunker but honestly its not needed. If you read you can read Ukrainian the sign in front of the bunker says exactly what the tour guide said. It is also rather chilly inside so a jacket would be a good idea. Built in the 1930’s it is a monstrous bunker located under a mountain. With over 1500 meters of tunnels to go through it takes about 2 hours total. The bunker never saw much serious action. There was some skirmishes during WW2 that around the bunker they fought for about 2 weeks but nothing major. We were glad we stopped here. Natasha doesn’t like military sights and even she enjoyed stopping here and walking through the bunker

ARNHEIM LINE BUNKER

These were a couple bunkers set off the road a little that you can stop and go through. There isn’t to much to see. They were built by the Hungarians prior to WW2. Now they are mostly empty, except for some trash. They are a few meters off the road and can be difficult to spot as you drive by.
...

BUNKER NEAR SYNEVER

This was as little museum set up to the Arpheid line that ran near Lake Syniver. There is a bunker just on the side of the road. You can go through it and there are old tank obstacles there also to view. All in all its nothing amazing but if your going to Syniver its worth the stop as its not out of the way.
...

BUNKER MUSEUM NEAR SYNIVER

A memorial to those who died trying to start and defend Carpathian Ukraine. A short lived country that was pro Ukrainian in the Carpathians. It was here that lightly defended Ukrainians lost their lived fighting against the Germans. The field was named Krasnye Pole (red field) because of the huge lose of life here by the defending Ukrainians.

KRASNYE POLE

Another spectacular find in Lviv Oblast! We were both amazed by this old fortress. Though the fortress doesn’t exist anymore its still amazing! The oldest mention of Tustan dates back to 1340. It was a wooden fortress built on top of giant rocks that sprang up from the ground! It would have been a very important defensive building along the legendary Salt Road along as a custom point for the salt. In its day it must have been a sight to see. The rocks spring from the ground and the fortress was precariously balanced on the peak of the them. The even carved a well down through the solid rock to have water inside the fort.  We were both truly amazed by this place. The rocks just themselves are amazing but to be able to climb up the rocks and see how they were carved to accept logs to build the original fort and to imagine what it was like balanced on top of these rocks. It was just amazing! The road to get here was rough and not paved for the last 4 km or so but it is absolutely worth it to come!

TUSTEN FORTRESS

One of the few war cemeteries we saw in Ukraine that was dedicated to the Ukrainian troops that fought and died in the area during WW2. The cemetery is very moving with rows and rows of crosses planted in the ground representing each person buried here. They died in battle in the fields that surround the cemetery. About 100 meters further down the road there is a giant cross made from war material that has been found in the surrounding fields from the large battles that took place here.

UKRAINIAN WAR CEMETERY

This is a huge memorial dedicated to those that died in the area during WW2. On the wall of the memorial are the names of those who died locally. You can see the names of entire families inscribed in the wall. Hundreds of names are written here. It’s a very moving memorial but could use some maintenance.
...

TERNY MEMORIAL

This is a relatively new monument to a battle that took place here during the uprising of the Soviet Union.  It was here that a group of students tried to stop the Bolshevicks from advancing any further to Kyiv. The students were organized and sent here by train. About 400 students volunteered for the fight that would be against 4,000 Bolshevick soldiers. The students were able to hold the army and delay them for a while. In the end though 30 students were captured and killed by the Bolshevicks. This monument was built in 2006 due to the fact that during the Soviet Union the students were looked at as criminals not the heroes they are remembered as in Ukraine.

HEROS OF KRUTY

This is a much less known bunker about 50km north of the Hitler Bunker that is near Vinnitsya. It was built for Herman Goring. There is not much left now. We walked around the forest for about 2 hours and found mostly pieces of the blown-up bunker and places where people have recently came to dig up anything of value to sell Be careful as to get here you will come to a meat processing plant. It is not for the faint of heart. Thousands of carcasses of animals are there if you happen to take a wrong turn.
...

GORING BUNKER

In 1709 there was a large battle here, The Battle of Poltava. Over 7,000 Swedish died here during the battle and were buried in the surrounding marsh land. To mark 200th anniversary of the battle there was this monument erected by the Russian government in honor of the Swedish that died here.
