We enjoyed this place immensely. The virgin steppe was quiet beautiful along with the tour we took of the zoo and the botanical park they have also. It is recommended to stop and spend the half a day needed for the tour. We were told if you come in spring or autumn there is a tour by truck through the large holding pens they have for the animals.
Founded in 1874 by Friedrich Eduardovich Faltz-Fein around the former German colony of Askania Nova. In 1919 the park was taken from the family by the Red Army as the Soviet Union came to be. In 1921 it was turned into the State Steppe Reserve of the Ukrainian SSR. Its goal being to preserve the virgin steppe and to try to breed animals.
