The Largest Kurgan (Burial Mound) in Ukraine

Created about 300 BC it is thought to be the tomb of the great Scythian king Ateius. First opened in 1891 inside they found a stone tomb that was designed in the Greek Style. Since then it has been opened many times most recently in the 1980’s. Many golden artifacts were found in these excavations which now rest mostly in the Hermitage Museum. This was also one of the first burial mounds to be reconstructed after it had been opened.
