If you are a military enthusiast then this is a must see place! Monty loved it not so much for the memorial that is there now but for the shear history that happened in during WW2.

An attempted crossing of the Dnepr in October 1943. Its still unknown exactly how many Soviet Soldiers were killed but the number varies from 50,000 to 500,000 and more. The Soldiers were herded across the water into known German positions. Many soldiers were not given weapons just told to pick up the weapons of the fallen men.

Now there is a huge statue to the attempted crossing. Built on top of a hill on the ruins of the Chuchin Fortress, from 1100.
