Tusten Fortress

Another spectacular find in Lviv Oblast! We were both amazed by this old fortress. Though the fortress doesn’t exist anymore its still amazing!

The oldest mention of Tustan dates back to 1340. It was a wooden fortress built on top of giant rocks that sprang up from the ground! It would have been a very important defensive building along the legendary Salt Road along as a custom point for the salt. In its day it must have been a sight to see. The rocks spring from the ground and the fortress was precariously balanced on the peak of the them. The even carved a well down through the solid rock to have water inside the fort.

We were both truly amazed by this place. The rocks just themselves are amazing but to be able to climb up the rocks and see how they were carved to accept logs to build the original fort and to imagine what it was like balanced on top of these rocks. It was just amazing! The road to get here was rough and not paved for the last 4 km or so but it is absolutely worth it to come!
